When I was five, I caught a bird
Right on Third Avenue. It was a yellow and white feathered cockatiel that was hanging on to the McDonald’s sign. Yes, that infamous McDonald’s on 72nd Street.
Running into the local deli with my dad, and returning with some sunflower seeds, we were able to entice the poor fellow to come down. We brought her home that day and she was our well-loved tropical bird from the not-so-tropical streets of Bay Ridge.
